It’s the 20th of May, on a Sunday morning, and here in Heerlen we already got the first 17 degrees Celsius, of the 23 promised to us for this afternoon. It’s a few minutes past 10am and the light beams knocking on my yet to open balcony door show it’s really accurate to call this a Sunday.
We had already invited the new season into our biology classroom with frog eggs and colourful tulips. Students, whatever their age, never seem to get bored of tadpoles and as soon as the baby frogs swam out of their eggs, they were given names and students frequently checked up on them. On the first picture below all the Teddys and Frootchys were still lying around in their eggs.
The flowers were not just used to brighten up the room’s atmosphere; we dissected them. Students drew the male and the female body parts, while I told them how plants have sex and they finally understood where the saying ‘the birds and the bees’ comes from. I love my job.
Even though it is sometimes rather busy, I still like making sure I’m not taking any of this for granted. And when I was writing up an Object of the Day for the Galaxy Zoo forum the other day, I suddenly felt inspiration for a silly poem and that was on a rainy day even. I must be springy inside.
Anyway, got to open that door now; cat is telling me he wants to go out and play. Come in, Spring. Nice to see you again.

Nice, I love this time of year. Even sounds as if we may get a mini-heatwave in London this week!
