It wasn’t my plan to write something on my birthday, but this year it’s a lazy (but also nice) one and I was just sitting on my balcony, in the Sun, with my laptop – reading a few more birthday wishes, when I suddenly had inspiration…
I’ve had a nice day so far. My friend Marcel came for lunch and music making (with a new cabasa) and later I went for ice cream with my mum. We sat by the water where I hugged that cow last week and Janey jumped in today. She also found two kids throwing sticks in for her. The last few birthdays were quieter ones actually. Lots of my friends live in England and I’m going to see them soon over there anyway. None of the Dutch friends I have know each other, so usually I see them during the week at different times, which makes it more spread out.
It’s funny how it changes over time. I’m not going to reflect about what it feels like being 26 years old, but I did have 26 nice birthdays. I remember when I was a kid, I was spoiled rotten by my grandparents. They wouldn’t ‘just’ visit with a few presents, they came with a few bags full of presents. But mostly I like looking back at the fun we had playing water games in the yard and having barbecues. I like having my birthday in May. I even enjoyed the one where I broke my right thumb in gym at school…
When I was a teenager, my mum organised parties with special themes. We celebrated in beach party style, complete with sand on the floor – in the living room! She also transformed the house into a jungle once and one year everything looked like a scene from a western movie. Even the invitations for my friends were creative. I’d do it like that still, but I’m also very happy sitting here with a nice glass of fake wine, watching the Sun go down. I’m thinking of how my grandmother, when she was dying, made my uncle promise he’d think of me on my birthdays. And of the nice days I’m going to have in the near future and how nice the view currently is.
What triggered me in writing this evening was one of the birthday cards in my e-mailbox, which I wanted to post here. Ted, with whom I recently did the podcast, made it with the picture taken by Rick and I think it’s brilliant! Thanks again, to everyone who thought of me today!

Hanny, is that a new orange cake voorwerp in that picture above?
I hope you had a nice day and we will come tomorrow to share some moments.
