Summertime!

I still almost can’t believe the school year is over. It went quickly in the end. And I think it’s a bit like the end of a calendar year…

You ‘close’ one year. You say goodbye to the kids you took care of that whole year. With whom you celebrated Easter and Christmas. With whom you decorated your classroom. You learned a lot with them and probably struggled together at times too. And you prepare for the new year coming, which everybody who isn’t a teacher probably thinks is not that much work. The very last day, when all the teachers have packed their chocolates, drawings, soaps, candles and other presents they got from ‘their’ kids and their parents (being a teacher is very rewarding), they hang around in the hall, talking a while because they won’t see each other until ‘next year’, until finally kissing each other goodbye – which can be compared to wishing each other a happy new year.

Anyway, the beginning of the new year is extra exciting for me, as I’m not quite sure where exactly I’ll be then (my ‘contract’ ended with the school year). But so far, I can’t complain (except for how you are treated in this country when you are a teacher without a job in the summer holiday, but I’ll not go into details about that). I can’t complain about the chances I’ve had in the past and I’m pretty confident about the future as well.

So, that leaves me with a six week void. It’s not the past year and not the next. It’s a very nice void, of which I’ll spend half in the United Kingdom again. I’ve had a great summer there last year and there are a few get-togethers planned with my English friends this August too. I’ll be staying at Edd’s in Portsmouth and I’m leaving this weekend. I’m very fortunate my parents will look after Janey and my plants and flat, while I’m enjoying the summer abroad. And I know I say this about every season but… don’t you love the Summer?!

When cycling for about an hour in beautiful Limburg, just for the fun if it, we bumped into this nice creature. Picture: Hanny van Arkel, with my dad’s camera.

Another nice part of the summer: summer fruit. Picture: Hanny van Arkel (with my own camera).

Hanny, have a nice stay and holiday across the river, and give our greetings to Edd and all your other friends.
