Yes, it’s an end of a year for me. And I’d say those July endings are almost always more crucial than the endings of the calendar years in December. Those might have fireworks, but nothing else changes much. My diary goes on, until I and my teacher colleagues ‘close’ the end of a school year. I might’ve said something like this before actually, but in July a lot does change for ‘us’…
I’m not going to sum up all the things that need to be done those last few weeks, as that might sound like complaining and I don’t mind that hectic period at all. But in between filling in last reports, having last meetings, organising your classroom and organising all the papers at your desk at home, you look back satisfied about ‘last year’ – which went by with the blink of an eye. Most of all we’re looking ahead to the new year to come though: making new schedules, planning lessons and of course filling in that nice gap called ‘Summer holiday’, which is not last year, but also not quite yet the new one.
Since my graduation already three years ago (yes, I had to think about that for a while), I never started the Summer holiday knowing what I’d be doing at the start of ‘next year’. Until now. I’m pretty sure I have mentioned before how at home I feel at the school (college) I’m currently working and I’m therefore happy to say that after replacing the Dutch teacher and the physics and chemistry teacher last year, I’m staying. And for the first time not as a replacement teacher! Next year I’ll be teaching biology and a combination of geology and history. (And I’m even thinking of starting another course – the more I say that out loud, the more that kind-of-scary decision becomes real).
Anyway, endings of school years also come with some nice activities, like a school trip, an open stage afternoon and of course, the graduation evenings. I’ve also been interviewed for the website of our school! And I just wanted to share that. After those, I kissed my colleagues goodbye (compare that to the ‘Happy New Year’ wishings on January 1st), and walked home – feeling pleased – on my flip-flops. Bring on that gap!

Nice. And how nice that you are back there next year!
