Yes I’m still going to publish pictures of the Spacetacular event and I also just got back from Astrofest, but I did read all the tweets about this Near-Earth asteroid in between too of course. It seems a hype, because we’re suddenly reminded of the fact it could have been a big piece of rock hitting our planet, instead of one just flying by. But I’m also pleased with the attention stories like this get, as I’m all for raising interest. So I said yes to the TV show on which I had appeared a while back, asking if I’d like to give a few comments on the news, as an amateur astronomer.
And this is how ‘my living room turned into TV studio’ looks like. We had loads of fun trying to fold that green screen again too. How many people does it take to fold back the Chroma key? Well, more than three in any case, apparently. During the interview they asked me what’s so exciting about astronomy (what isn’t!) and if I haven’t got a poster of my Voorwerp somewhere (maybe I should get one, one day). I also got to show The Cosmic Tourist and they asked me to play a tune…
I like being an amateur astronomer / communicator. When the video is up, I’ll show you. And many thanks to my astro buddies for sharing this stuff with me! Clear skies!

PS Random thing I learned the other day; the ‘boring’ name has a system!
PPS Other random bit of info: in Galaxy Zoo (SDSS pictures) asteroids look like smarties.

The video is up, but I heard it might give a few problems outside this little country. You can try though and I’ll get back about it too. http://www.hartvannederland.nl/nederland/2013/asteroide-scheert-rakelings-langs-de-aarde/
Oh and this is what Brian wrote about it: http://brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssbfeb13a.html#07
Hi Hanny, Your livingroom converted into a TV-studio??…..hmmm, looks like a situation strangely familiar to the one in a very familiar Selsey house of some very familiar famous bloke who used to live and work there!!…….and yep, I am eagerly waiting, telescope packed and ready, biteing my nails off for the clouds hopefully to give away…so we, a few of the Dordrecht Astro-lads, can observe “that rock” fly between our lovely pale blue dot and that other big rock called The Moon!
Hi Jan – unfortunately Heerlen is cloudy. Hope you have more luck!
As we say in good english; “Helaas pindakaas”…Dordrecht was completely clouded too yesterdayevening….so no rock fly by for us, unfortunately. Sometimes I really do envy indoor astronomers like You and Arie!!
Stunning video of Asteroid #2012DA14 passing the Earth on @APOD today: http://goo.gl/j5fgy !!
